Occupational Therapy Services

Paediatric Occupational Therapy services

When a child is experiencing difficulty with daily tasks such as play, self-care or school activities, an Occupational Therapist will work with the child and family to help the child improve their performance.

In collaboration with the family and the healthcare team, Occupational Therapists assess a child’s level of function. A thorough assessment is performed using modern standardised tools, along with a thorough observation and interview with the primary caregivers.

Sessions

Sessions are available most weekdays. Appointments may be made by telephoning the clinic on (03) 5021 5569 during business hours.  Sessions range from 30 – 60 minutes in duration, depending on goals and parent preference.

Parent attendance

A parent is generally expected to attend the Occupational Therapy sessions to enable them to gain the skills necessary to understand the program, expectations of the child, and strategies to assist them.  This supports ‘generalisation’ of skills at home.

Attending Therapy
Assessment

Referral is not required. However, please bring any relevant reports with you to the assessment session. The initial assessment will take one hour. A treatment plan is then developed to address identified difficulties. Interventions will include support for caregivers to help the child throughout the day and to support the learning and development of skills in other settings such as kindergarten, childcare or school.  Follow-up sessions are usually 30 minutes duration and may be scheduled at weekly or fortnightly intervals. The schedule is flexible and may be altered to suit individual needs.
